Clock, Paper, Scissors...

I've been doing some work for my big cousin and her toy selling company. The latest brief I have been set is to design some new toy clocks for children on the theme of princesses, clowns and pirates. Here are some drawings I am currently working on...

[Can you believe I almost went with "(Did you) Clock (the door)?" as the title of this post? Good job I came up with that extremely appropriate pun last minute...(ok, I added the scissors into the photo)]

AuRA...

 

A tshirt line which I created, based on a mix of the beauty of Japanese nature and British lazy summer days. I wanted the tshirts to be printed in gold, hence the (Au) of the brand AuRA. Aura is also the name of the Goddess of sunlight and the breeze (fitting...). I wrote a 'poem' which would go on the reverse of the tags and give a greater sense of the brand:

Aura, Goddess of light and sun

Wake me when the day's begun,

So I may feel summer's glow

and watch how gently nature grows

And walk the earth with those I love

under the sky who smiles above

For perfect days don't have to shine

for gold to fill this heart of mine

 For the brand I created a logo and tags, as well as potential displays. The tags are designed '3D' do that the top can be ripped off to reveal a 'fortune' inside.

I have hand screen-printed a selection of t shirts (the designs have changed slightly), which I will photograph and post soon...

Whisky Business...

 

Another D&AD competition brief, although this one I approached in a light-hearted manner... To package a new brand of whisky, aimed at a female audience. 

If you can't read the description on the image, the idea is that a shot of whisky is sealed inside a 'slap/snap bracelet' (popular in the 90s), meaning drinkers can wear their drink for easy transportation, whilst looking extremely fashionable. Probably it's most notable feature is that it can be 'slapped' around a glass of ice/frozen item to cool the whisky without losing any of its punch when ice otherwise melts and dilutes the drink.

I think I'm onto something... 

Ministry of Sound...

 

This year's D&AD brief entry- to create a series of posters for Ministry of Sound's 'Saturday Sessions.' I wanted to use a more unusual hand drawn approach, and used the digital DJ decks as inspiration...

Cool Camping...

An old D&AD brief which I attempted to try my hand at Art Direction- the brief was to create a window display for Diesel clothing, on the theme of 'cool camping.' I had a lot of fun with this!

My entry for Playstation's 'Access' magazine cover competition. The theme is "Gaming takes over the world." 

(The tedious method of public voting is the system they are using, so I have no chance of winning but it was a fun one-day brief...)

"Fluid"

For our first brief of Year 3, we were given a word and told to research it in a written and visual manner. My word was 'fluid', so I decided to go with the concept of 'fluid speech'. I came up with a handful of tongue-twisters (heavily based on the letter f- a fluid letter itself) and presented them in an illustrative way. This is the 'monograph' I produced...

Project Brief_Self Promotion

Our final brief (!!) of Year 2 was to summarize our years work, as well as creating a piece of self promotion that could be sent to potential employers. I chose a 'fairytale' theme, with the idea that this is my 'story so far'...

Project Brief_Sign Systems

Following on from the corporate identity project, we were to choose one of our logos and develop a sign system for it within a building of our choice. I chose the Open House logo, a place where children aged 11-16 can come and talk about their issues, escape home or just chill out. I designed a flow chart system to help visitors decide which room they need, and used a collaged theme similar to that of my initial logo.

...I also created a 'digital' alternative of the flow chart, keeping with the times...

Project Brief_Corporate Identity

The task for this brief was to design logos/identities for four (fictional) companies. I seemed to struggle with this brief, possibly because I found it difficult to create something 'simple' which doesn't appear to have many layers of meaning to it. However, I tried to create something different for each logo and something a little less predictable...

We were then to develop one identity into designs for stationary....

Project Brief_Sell Ice to an Eskimo

The latest brief was simple to 'Sell Ice to an Eskimo'. I decided that the best way to sell it to them would be in the form of 'ice plugs', filling in those exposed 'fishing holes' to prevent comedy mishaps. I considered the language barrier and decided that for this brief, pictures would speak louder than words. I thought about digital moving image to tell the story, but felt that sending a physical item in a paper boat was far more appealing... ("ICY PLUGS - YOU SEE PLUGS")

Project Brief_Book Covers

The book covers are finally finished, after a tedious week of tweaking the waitress so that she looked vaguely 'normal'! Again I am asking myself why I chose an illustrative appraoch to the brief... Anywho, the concept for this design is a waitress who is 'offering you information on a plate'..A quick, simple service with a smile! I liked the idea of a 1950s American style waitress, so based my type, colour scheme and general feel of the design around that era...

Rat's not funny...

Whilst working on my current brief, I was troubled by the look of the waitress' left hand and was told by a friend to add in a thumb to the equation...which consequently ended up looking like a small shrew-like animal...So, I decided to add more features to the little critter and although it has no connection to the theme whatsoever, it makes me chuckle...

Pattern You Up..

For the latest brief we are to design book covers for the 'A Short Introduction To' series...I created these patterns as part of my initial designs (for the subjects 'Allotment Gardening', 'Ballroom Dancing' and 'Weather/Meteorology'), but have now taken a new direction!
